Although rheumatoid arthritis can be difficult to diagnose at first in children, it is crucial that an early diagnosis be made so that children can receive the treatment they need early on. It is important for children to start treatment such as physiotherapy, occupational therapy and medication as early as possible in order to avoid disability. Children may not always be able to describe the pain they are feeling in their joints which can make it difficult for doctors to pinpoint arthritis as a diagnosis, but parents need to be persistent and continually check on their child’s symptoms such as swelling in the joints. Children should not have to suffer in silence.
